Size, talent and plenty of local flavor highlights the roster of the Connecticut Topballerz, the new New Haven-based American Basketball Association team that begins play next month.

After a weeklong mini-camp run by general manager and assistant coach John Scavuzzo, the Topballerz have announced their 17-man roster. The team will be led by former Hillhouse star and playground legend Bobby Moore, Waterbury’s Kelvin Davis and 7-footer Joe Dorsett-Jeffreys of Norfolk State.

Also making the cut were former New Britain High star Roosevelt Lee, 6-8 big man Raheim Lowery out of Dowling University in Long Island, former Hillhouse and Rhode Island College standout Kaseem Johnson, ex-Gateway Community College star Braxton Darden, former Harding High standout Antoine Waller, former semi-pro player Jeff Johnson, former University of New Haven shooter Shawn Unstunel and ex-Bulkeley High star Walden St. Juste. Rounding out the roster are Darcell Reddick, Tom Beaudinet, Jamual Warren, Lance Fuertado, Japhel McNeil, Richard Byrd, Dale Saunders and Dave Akinyouye.

The team will dress 12 players for home games and 10 for road tilts, with the other five serving as practice players. It has not yet been determined who will be on the active roster.

The Topballerz will play their first game on Saturday, Nov. 12 at 7 p.m. at Albertus Magnus (where they’ll play all their home contests). There will be both pregame and halftime ceremonies honoring T.J. Mathis, the former Hamden High star who was fatally shot last month. Michael “The Chief” Peterson will be doing a poetry jam at halftime in honor of Mathis.

The Topballerz will face the two-time Northeast Division champion Jersey Express in their opener. The Express is coached by former Seton Hall standouts Terry Dehere and Luther Wright.
